4 Things You May Not Know About Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world. The procedure is designed to remove fat from a specific area of the body and has become increasingly popular over the years.

However, there are some things you may not know about liposuction.

Liposuction Is A Permanent Procedure

One of the biggest misconceptions about liposuction is that it’s a temporary procedure. In reality, once you have had your fat removed, it will not grow back on its own. However, if you gain weight after having liposuction done, then you may notice that your “deflated” areas will fill up again with fat as well as any new fat deposits that happen after surgery. This means that if you have liposuction done at age 20 and then gain weight at age 40, your results will be considerably less dramatic than if you had done so at age 30 or 35.

Liposuction Can Be Done On Anyone At Any Age

While there may be some restrictions placed on certain patients due to health conditions or age (such as being under 18 years old), anyone who wants liposuction can have it done as long as they are healthy enough to undergo surgery with general anesthesia.

Liposuction Only Removes Fat Cells

Fat cells are connected to blood vessels and nerves, so when they’re removed through suctioning or other methods, blood vessels may be damaged and nerves may be severed during the process. If this happens, there will be bleeding inside the tissue and swelling around the site of injury. To reduce risk of complications after surgery, doctors recommend taking aspirin or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to reduce inflammation and pain.

The Procedure

There are two types of liposuction procedures: tumescent and non-tumescent. Tumescent liposuction involves injecting fluid into the area surrounding the fat before removing it. This fluid helps prevent bleeding during surgery and makes it easier for doctors to see what they’re doing during surgery. Non-tumescent liposuction involves making small incisions in the fat layer before suctioning out the fat cells and any remaining fluids.

The world of liposuction is expanding more and more every day. With innovative surgical techniques & new technologies, we are truly living in a golden age for liposuction. Call Paul A. Watterson MD today at 801-571-2020 to schedule your consultation!
