8 things you should know about Botox

img 0488 Botox is a household name, but some people still don’t know exactly how it works to smooth lines and wrinkles on your face. If you’ve been thinking about talking with a doctor about Botox treatment, here are eight things you should know:

  1. Botox is the top-selling treatment of its kind. It was FDA-approved in 2002 for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet.
  2. Botox is best for treating the lines and wrinkles in the upper third of the face, as these are caused by dynamic wrinkles.
  3. Botox is made from botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily blocks nerve messages between the muscle and the brain. This relaxes the muscle and helps smooth out lines and wrinkles.
  4. Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that form from muscle contractions under the skin. These wrinkles are caused by repeated facial expressions such as smiling, frowning or squinting and form over several years.
  5. Botox doesn’t work on static wrinkles, which are constantly visible and caused by natural skin aging, sun damage and the declining production of collagen. Dermal fillers are designed to address static wrinkles.
  6. Treatment consists of using a fine needle to inject the Botox into the specific facial muscles. Patients may feel a slight pinch sensation during treatment.
  7. Treatment usually takes no more than 15-20 minutes, and patients can return to normal activities after they leave their treatment session. No anesthesia is required.
  8. There is no down time, and patients will start to see results in the next few days, with full results over the next few months. You’ll want to return for repeat treatments to maintain and prolong results. Our professionals can develop a treatment plan that’s right for you.

Botox can achieve amazing results as a standalone treatment, but it also works well with other non-surgical and surgical treatments to help with facial rejuvenation. To learn more, call our office at 801-571-2020 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Watterson.
