Everything You Should Know About the Different Types of Liposuction

Young woman in a yellow and blue bikini, before and after liposuction Liposuction is a versatile and effective solution for removing fat deposits that cling on despite diet and exercise. It can help you get the slimmer, shapelier, and more contoured body you long for while boosting confidence.

At Watterson Plastic Surgery in Draper, UT, Dr. Paul Watterson draws upon over 40 years of experience in body contouring to provide natural, beautiful liposuction results. Because every patient’s fat removal needs are unique, Dr. Watterson uses several different liposuction techniques that he can tailor to individual needs.

Whether dealing with small problem areas or larger fat deposits, we offer advanced liposuction techniques to help you reach your body goals. Our blog today covers the three types of liposuction Dr. Watterson may perform.

Suction-Assisted Liposuction (SAL)

SAL is the traditional method of fat removal. It’s probably what you think of when you hear “liposuction.” With this method, Dr. Watterson creates tiny incisions and inserts a small blunt-tipped tool (a cannula) to break up fat deposits. He uses a powerful vacuum to suction to remove the loose fat precisely.

SAL is good for smaller areas and has inconspicuous small scars. It’s a tried-and-true way to address unwanted fat. However, there are now more advanced methods that may cause less bruising and encourage faster recoveries.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) can effectively treat large fat deposits. This technique uses ultrasound waves to liquefy fat cells, making them easier to suction.

UAL is effective for bigger areas with dense fat, like the back or chest. Because the fat is liquefied, it’s easier to remove and less likely to leave lumps and bumps. UAL provides a powerful option for tackling challenging fat deposits while delivering smooth, natural contours. However, it may not offer the same body sculpting capabilities as the next option, PAL.

Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)

Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) is a go-to technique because it’s fast and highly effective in precisely removing fat deposits. With this method, Dr. Watterson uses a vibrating cannula to gently and precisely dislodge fat and emulsify it (break it into tiny droplets).

The vibration enhances control and precision, so it’s useful even in small and delicate body parts.

This technique is so accurate that it can reduce bruising and swelling, thereby speeding up recovery.

Dr. Watterson uses the Separation and Fat Equalization (SAFE) technique after fat removal, using a smaller cannula to remove the emulsified fat.

He then equalizes the fat, creating even fat distribution under the skin. This creates a smooth appearance and allows for beautifully sculpted results.

PAL is ideal for patients who want precise body contouring, especially if looking to treat multiple areas.

Each technique has its applications. Some patients, particularly those with loose skin, may also need a tummy tuck
