Tummy Tuck, or Liposuction? Find Out Which Is Right for You

It’s summer time and the beach is calling. To get ready for bikini season, we’ve compared two of our popular body shaping procedures  to help you know which is the best option for you.

First, what is the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?

Put simply, a tummy tuck procedure removes excess fat as well as skin from your abdomen. It can also re-center separated muscles. The results are a flatter, smoother and contoured stomach area that you’ll be excited to show off at the beach.

Meanwhile, liposuction only removes stubborn fat from any area of your body, the most common being the neck, upper arms, abdomen, hips and thighs. The procedure is intended to be used as a way to sculpt the body and give you a body you’d be proud to show off.

How long is recovery time for each?

While a simple procedure, a tummy tuck is still a major surgery. You will be able to walk soon after and short walks are encouraged, though you may experience some pain along the incision marks. Compression garments will help to keep the swelling minimal as well as help your skin adapt to its new shape. You should be back to work in two weeks.

Liposuction has a very similar recovery process – you should still wear compression garments and only engage in light exercise. However, many patients describe the sensation like bruising for the first 48 hours with a possibility of some tenderness for a few weeks after.

Will I have scars?

With a tummy tuck, a lengthy incision scar should be expected. But there are many steps that can be taken to minimize the end result. Continue wearing your compression garments, avoid movements that could pull your incisions, keep sunlight off your scar, and even massage the area with lotion.

The procedure for liposuction involves using a tube to spot treat a desired area. This means minimal skin puncture, leading to minimal scarring. One thing to consider after the fat removal is whether the skin that has been stretched out from excess weight can tighten back up on its own or not.
