What are the different types of tummy tucks?

If you’ve worked hard to lose weight and tone your abs, but you are still dealing with an unwanted pooch, then you may be considering a tummy tuck. Sometimes, even the best diet and exercise programs can’t deliver what a tummy tuck can achieve. When it comes to tummy tucks, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Here, we take a look at the different methods that are adapted to meet the individual needs of patients.

Standard Abdominoplasty

The standard abdominoplasty is known as the traditional full tummy tuck and is ideal for women who have had children and dealt with stretched stomach skin and separated abdominal muscles. This surgery consists of making two incisions. The first incision runs from hipbone to hipbone, along the pubic line to hide the resulting scar once it heals. The second incision is made at the belly button. During this surgery, the skin is separated from the underlying muscle and the abdominal muscles are pulled together and stitched into place. Stomach muscles that have become separated are repaired, The skin is pulled downward, while excess skin is trimmed. The belly button is reattached into a more natural position. The result is a smoother contour and narrower waist.

Partial Abdominoplasty

Also called a mini tummy tuck, this surgery consists of making one incision along the pubic line. The length will vary depending on the degree of sagging. These surgical techniques are good for patients who don’t have a lot of sagging skin but want to get rid of the pooch.

Lipoabdominoplasty

This newer technique consists of using liposuction to thin the abdominal tissues and tighten the skin. This is great for patients who want additional fat removed from the central abdomen as well as loose skin and muscles tightened.

Umbilical Float

For patients who have a small amount of loose skin or significant muscle diastasis, the umbilical (belly button) float or transposition is a great option to help preserve a natural belly button.
