5 fast facts about breast reduction surgery

iStock 891536472 Breast reduction surgery has one of the highest patient satisfaction rates among cosmetic surgery procedures and for good reason. Many women say this surgery is life-changing and greatly improves their quality of life after getting it done.

Read on for some fast facts about this popular cosmetic surgery.

  1. Women who have macromastia, or oversized breasts, often deal with physical pain associated with the condition. This can be back, neck and shoulder pain caused by the weight of their breasts. Many women deal with skin irritation at or near the crease of their breasts. Women also complain about indentations made in their shoulders due to bra straps digging into them from the weight of the breasts.
  2. Many women also experience emotional pain from excessively large breasts. Women will avoid certain social activities and physical participation because of their breast size. Many women don’t like shopping as it may be difficult to find clothing that fits comfortably. Women also complain about the social stigma of having oversized breasts and don’t like the unwanted attention.
  3. Breast reduction surgery can also improve the appearance of sagging, stretched breast skin and improve a low breast profile, where the nipple-areolar complex is below the breast crease. Enlarged areolae can be reduced in size during surgery as well to be more in proportion with the new breast size.
  4. You don’t necessarily have to have medical problems or emotional pain to have breast reduction surgery. Some women are just unhappy with the size of their breasts and want to undergo surgery.
  5. It’s important to have someone take you to this outpatient surgery but also take you home and stay with you the first night. You may need some help for several days after surgery. You’ll want to take it easy for the first 1-2 weeks and avoid any strenuous exercise for up to six weeks, depending on your doctor’s advice. You may be able to return to work after a few days or a long weekend.
