What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that breaks down and removes the fat that is just under the skin, known as the subcutaneous fat layer. This layer of fat is the most resistant to diet and exercise efforts and why people turn to liposuction to get rid of it.

Is it a weight loss procedure?

While liposuction breaks down and removes fat, it is not considered a weight loss procedure. Ideal candidates should be at or near their ideal body weight prior to the surgical procedure.

Where on the body can liposuction be performed?

The most common areas of the body where liposuction is performed includes the abdomen, muffin top, love handles, outer thighs, breast area, bottom of the upper arms, bra strap area, back of the neck and the chin area. Less common areas are the ankles, inner thighs and upper back.

Who are good candidates for liposuction?

In addition to being at or near your ideal body weight, ideal candidates are nonsmokers who are in good physical shape and have realistic expectations for the result from the procedure. You should have good skin elasticity. Loose skin and cellulite will only become more pronounced with liposuction.

What happens to the fat?

Once the fat is removed from liposuction, those fat cells are gone for good. If you gain weight, then you will develop fat cells in other areas of the body that could negate the results from the procedure.

What is recovery like?

Most liposuction patients can return to work in a few days and return to normal activities in 2-4 weeks, depending on how they’re healing and the areas that were treated. You can expect to have some swelling, bruising and soreness in the areas that were treated.
