Have questions about liposuction? We’ve got answers

Liposuction As one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed today, liposuction slims and reshapes areas of the body that have resistant pockets of unwanted fat. Patients often have lots of questions about this procedure and how it works. Here, we take a deeper look at how liposuction works by answering some of the most frequently asked questions.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes stubborn fat that you usually can’t get rid of through diet and exercise alone. There are several different ways to perform liposuction. The most traditional practice is suction-assisted lipectomy to break up and remove fat. Your surgeon may use ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty or power=assisted liposuction techniques to ensure optimal results for you.

What areas can be treated?

Each area of the body requires different approaches and technique. The most commonly treated areas include the abdomen, upper back, bra roll area, lower back, inner and outer thighs, knees, ankles, and even the neck. This procedure can be done in combination with other procedures such as a tummy tuck or fact lift to help patients achieve their aesthetic goals.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

Patients who have a localized area of fat and excellent skin elasticity will do well with liposuction. Patients should not seek liposuction as a weight-loss procedure. Its focus is on getting rid of stubborn pockets of fat to improve the body’s contours.

What can I expect during recovery?

Patients can expect some pain and swelling after the procedure. Most pain subsides after the first 48 hours, but you may have tenderness for the next few weeks. Patients can use over-the-counter or prescribed pain medication to take care of the discomfort.

To help with swelling and healing overall, your surgeon will recommend light exercise as soon as you’re able, and wearing compression garments for several weeks. You’ll want to avoid strenuous exercise for a few weeks, but your surgeon can help you determine how to ease back into it.
